William Rees grew up in Swansea and was educated at the Bishop Gore Grammar School. After graduating from U. C. W. Aberystwyth he continued his studies in French literature and theatre at the University of Exeter and then at St. Catherine's College, Oxford. Since 1975 he has taught French and Theatre Studies at Eton College, where he is a House Master. In 1990 he published The Penguin Book of French Poetry, 1820-1950, a comprehensive critical anthology with prose translations.
